At Stoke Sixth Form we are keen to provide you with opportunities to develop your learning outside of the traditional classroom environment. We want you to see where an A Level in English can take you!
Recently, we were delighted to welcome Dr Hetta Howes to the college to talk to our students about the benefits of an English Literature degree. She spoke about how English Literature is taught at university and also gave advice on what career pathways it opens up. Dr Howes then delivered a fascinating lecture on ‘Feminist Approaches to Hamlet’. This enabled our students to experience first-hand what it would be like to study the discipline at degree level. She considered the various ways in which the character Ophelia has been interpreted across time. Our students found the talk engaging and had lots of questions. A Level English Literature student Evie Pearce commented that ‘it was great to debate ideas and see things from different perspectives.’ We look forward to welcoming Hetta back in the future and providing more opportunities for our students to sample university life!

Teacher of English Language
Dave has studied far and wide in a range of disciplines but his route through life brought him to Stoke. He’s been teaching at the college since 2008 and during that time his teaching has largely focused on GCSE Language and A Level Literature. Dave’s real love is writing. His heart lies with the surprising turn of phrase in a poem, the deep characterisation in a novel, the overall magic of literature, which allows us to transcend time and space, communicating with those of different ages and different places. His deep belief is that every student has a voice and every teacher’s role is to help them uncover it.
Teacher of English Language
Stewart has been teaching since 2002 and has worked at the College since 2006. Though experienced in all aspects of English teaching, his main specialism is English Language A-Level.
The sociolinguistic concepts and issues he gets to explore with his English Language students also inform Stewart’s own academic writing and research. He has spoken as a guest lecturer at several universities on the subject of language diversity in the classroom.
Stewart believes that a good education should promote empathy, curiosity and critical thinking in equal measure and that the study of English is a great way of cultivating all three of these characteristics.
Curriculum Manager of English
Jon has been teaching English, on and off, for thirty years, including seven years at Stoke on Trent College, five years at Newcastle College as Head of English and nine years at Stoke Sixth Form, the last two as Head of English. A Potteries man and Stoke City season ticket holder, Jon is an ex-student of the College and has always been a passionate supporter of it. His aim is to enable students like he was to enjoy College life as much as he did and allow it to enable the facilitation of future success in academic and employment paths.

I’m Dee Patel, Assistant Director of STEM and I joined the College in 2018.
I have a degree in Mathematics from Cardiff University and have taught maths across a variety of institutions around the Midlands managing mathematics departments in several colleges before coming to Stoke Sixth Form. As well as teaching, I am responsible for ensuring smooth running of the department and implementing changes to make improvements for students, staff and the College. Outside of work, I get involved in charity fundraising and enjoy mountain climbing with my family. In recent years, we have completed the UK National three peaks challenge, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and reached Everest Base Camp.

I’m Martin Whalley, Curriculum Manager for Maths and Computing
I have a degree in maths with statistics and am very passionate about the use and misuse of statistics in the media and in social media – especially over the recent months. I am in my third year at Stoke, having previously taught in Felixstowe for 7 years. I also have a wealth of experience outside education having worked in retail, a solicitor’s office, event management and as a driving instructor. When not teaching I can sometimes be found on the hunt for spooks and spirits as part of a paranormal investigation group. I am also a trained fire-eater.

I’m Penny Patrick, Teacher of Mathematics in the STEM department.
I have recently started teaching at SSFC after having spent 20 years teaching in 11-18 year old schools and working as an Examinations Officer. I have a degree in Maths and Management Science from Keele after which I studied with The Post Office to become CIMA qualified. I turned to teaching after a few years of accounting and love to share my passion for Maths with students. I particularly love A Level Maths and Further Maths. I love to be outdoors doing work for Duke of Edinburgh programmes, as well as hill walking and sailing. My second love, after Maths, is Sheep.

My name is Richard Collins and I am a member of the Mathematics department here at Stoke on Trent Sixth Form College
I am in fact the longest-serving member of the maths team, having taught here for my entire career. It is possible that I may even have taught your parents! I have a degree in Mathematics and Design & Technology, and an MSc. in Mathematics and Mathematical Education. I teach A Level Maths and Further Maths and have a slight preference for Pure Maths and Mechanics, though of course all maths is good! Outside of work I am very keen on racket sports, and am a big fan of music.

I’m Alice Fitzgerald, a teacher of Maths at the Sixth Form College.
I have a degree in Mathematics with Psychology and also a Masters in Education. I am currently in my tenth year of teaching and my aim has always been to share my love of maths with all of the students that I teach. I have been fortunate enough to have been involved with maths outreach projects in the city, working with high school students to encourage them to study maths beyond GCSE. When I’m not working, I enjoy exploring the forest with my one year old son.

I’m David Parry, a teacher of Maths at the Sixth Form College.
Having had a successful career as an accountant for various multi-national corporations I recently decided to change career and become a teacher of mathematics. Having taught for a couple of years in Crewe I stopped to complete my BSc in Mathematics at Keele University graduating in 2019. My PGCE at Manchester University followed the following year and I started working at Stoke 6th Form College in January of 2021. I am a passionate mathematician who loves the subject and the history that surrounds it and I regularly read books on maths topics. I am passionate about social equality and making maths accessible to as many people as I can. When I’m not “mathsing” I love sport and can often be found on stage in a variety of amateur plays produced locally. I also love travelling and at last count have visited over 100 countries and more than 250 cities around the globe.

I’m Tobias Dando, a teacher of Maths at the Sixth Form College.
I joined the STEM department here at the college this year as a newly qualified Teacher of Mathematics. I have a Bachelors degree in Maths and a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from Aston University in Birmingham, and I completed my PGCE immediately after my studies (which has led me up to now). I have always been fascinated by maths and its applications; I often find myself listening to podcasts about the wider contexts of current maths and science research; and I am excited to be working in a role where I can use my subject knowledge with verve to try to make maths more accessible and enjoyable for everyone (which is what it should be!) When not teaching or working through maths problems, you may find me caring for my plants, listening to UK garage music, or just hanging out with friends or family.

Learning is placed at the heart of the Sixth Form College and as such the College has been built to reflect this. On each of the College’s three floors is a Learning Resource Centre, which offers you an environment that will suit your learning style and mood.
Designed to meet the needs of modern-day students, our Learning Resource Centres give you reliable access to computers and printers. Located next to the teaching staff base, the LRCs are the perfect place to complete your work. The ground floor LRC is open until late throughout the week ensuring you meet deadlines.
Do you need peace and quiet to complete your work? Then the quiet study area is ideal. With plenty of desks and access to computers, there’s no better place to focus on your studies.
Perhaps the most unique feature in the new building is the row of three learning pods. The pods, each with their own identity, are individual break-out spaces from the LRCs.

I’m Dr Matt Addie and I teach both science and maths at the college. I bring a wealth of industrial knowledge to lessons having worked in chemistry research for 15 years before teaching. Alongside this, I also recruited graduate students for the multinational company I was working for and I’ve run my own business so I can tell you some of the things that employers are looking for in interviews! All of the amazing opportunities I have had in the world of work were only possible because of my education and this is my motivation for teaching science and maths today. When I’m not teaching, I have a slight obsession with growing small trees in pots – the Japanese art of bonsai.
Dr Martin Parker is Curriculum Manager and Head of Science at the college. His subject specialism is Chemistry. Prior to teaching, Martin was a Senior Research Fellow, working at the cutting-edge of Biochemical research at various universities in the UK (Bristol, Leeds & Sheffield) and USA (University of California, Berkeley). Aside from science and education, he is passionate about music, playing modern jazz on the alto saxophone.
I chose to study at the Sixth Form College because of the high quality teaching and facilities on offer. I have found my courses very interesting and enjoyable so far and I am very happy with my decision to study here…

An Introduction to Maths & Computing.
First year A-Level Geography students visiting Ainsdale on the Sefton Coast. Students spent time collecting data on species diversity, pH, wind speed and slope angle to support their understanding of sand dune ecosystems. Many students re-visited and collected further data to support independent investigations which accounts for 20% of the overall A-Level grade.
As part of the Geography curriculum, students take part in a total of 6 full days of fieldwork. In June a residential to North Yorkshire takes place. We stay at the YHA in York and cover a range of topics including coastal management on the Holderness Coast and changing places in Hull.

Our visit to Birmingham in April looks at some of the key content from the Changing Places unit of work. Concepts and theories relating to meaning and representation of place, economic characteristics of places, economic change and rebranding/regeneration are all covered in our journey across Birmingham.

We also have extensive links with the School of Geography, Geology and Environment at Keele University and utilise this for study days.

Students logging and recording data at Park Hall Country Park, looking at Triassic sandstones and conglomerates to learn about ancient deserts and flash floods. This SSSI is only 10 minutes away from college and is a fantastic introduction to geological fieldwork skills.
Students study the external rock structures, looking at how they have been deformed by tectonic movements, and then go into a 200 year old copper mine to investigate how the folded rocks affect the orientation of mineral veins.
Students visit the Peak district and learn about the ancient environment in the Carboniferous when the UK was part of a warm shallow tropical sea, they learn about the rock types formed, sedimentary logging and other fieldwork techniques, and even sniff the rocks to see if they can detect remnants of oil. We sometimes even stop for an ice-cream if the weather is good!
Students go fossil hunting in the remains of a 440million year old ocean, learning about the geological history of the UK.

I am really interested in landscapes, environments and the lithology of different places, as well as being passionate about collecting rock samples and landscape photography.
I just find geography an extremely interesting subject that I didn’t want to stop learning about.
The A Level Geology course introduced me to the broad field of Geology, and gave me insight into the numerous career paths and opportunities for research and study in this field.

Here we see BTEC Dance perform the work ‘Breathe Me’. This work also features the beautiful dancing of our former A-Level Dance and BTEC Dance student Laura Watson performing a series of highly technical fouettés (turns!) in the centre of the group. Laura is now in her second year of the dance degree at the renowned LIPA but returns to lead workshops often and we always love to see her!

The stunning former A-Level Dance and BTEC Musical Theatre student Maisie Asbury is currently in her third year at the highly prestigious Doreen Bird Conservatoire. She returns to offer workshops which are an invaluable experience for our A-Level Dance, BTEC Dance and BTEC Musical Theatre students. Billie Wagstaff is completing her dance degree course at Derby University. Through our link with Park Hill Primary School she choreographed many stunning works on their young students for yearly dance festivals at the Victoria Hall Theatre which were a great success- the school was very grateful to Billie! Through this Billie developed a love of teaching dance and now wishes to pursue a career in this area. Many of our former students are now Teachers of Dance and Heads of Performing Arts at schools, colleges and universities in the local area and beyond.
Here is Joseph Wood who is a former BTEC Musical Theatre and BTEC Music Performance student and is now in his second year at Laine Theatre Arts- a Musical Theatre Conservatoire that is incredibly difficult to gain a place in. Joseph is a true ‘triple threat’ with outstanding skills in dance, singing and acting. We were very grateful when he returned before Christmas to deliver a workshop for our BTEC Musical Theatre students. Annabel completed her dance degree at the prestigious London Contemporary Dance School. She is currently dancing professionally with Edge Dance Company. Here is a clip of her performing the release based sequence that she taught our students.
Former amazing A-Level Dance student Samantha Harding returns to us often to lead workshops which have proved inspirational for our students. Samantha recently completed her dance degree at the Doreen Bird Conservatoire gaining a First-class Honours. Following this superb achievement Samantha has been performing around the world in a production of ‘Grease’. Here she is performing at the end of one of the workshops that she led at the Sixth Form last year.

John had a passion for his EPQ which often results in students achieving very well. He wanted to tackle a subject that linked to his career pathway into medicine. He worked extremely hard not only on his topic itself but to develop the necessary skills for completing the EPQ. These skills included academic research, compiling literature reviews, time-management, planning, Harvard referencing, reflection skills etc.
To what extent does supernatural myth have a factual basis”, based on Homer’s Iliad, Odyssey and Homeric Hymns
Iona was an outstanding student who took to the independent aspects of the EPQ with gusto. She was a natural scholar; quiet and organised; able to assimilate information and communicate it clearly and succinctly. The topic involved wide ranging reading of classical texts and associated academic works. This proved to be a sound basis for her future studies as she has now started her degree in Classics at St Anne’s College, Oxford.
